UP appeals for coal to Lalitpur thermal power plant
11 May 2015
Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has made a pitch for Bajaj-owned thermal power station in Lalitpur. The UP CM, who also holds the power portfolio, has asked Centre to allow supply of coal to the power plant through MoU till the time a formal coal linkage is not given.
In a letter to Prime Minister's Office, Akhilesh said the 1980MW power station was set up after considering the coal policy of 2007. The application for a coal linkage was sent to the ministry in 2009. In 2013, the cabinet committee for economic affairs (CCEA) allowed companies associated with Coal India Limited to supply coal under the MoU route to the power plant.
Yadav said he approached Centre after learning that the coal supply to the power plant would be made only till June this year, after which the plant may come to a grinding halt. CM's concern, not suprisingly, comes in wake of high demand for power going up during the peak demand period.
