US utility coal stockpiles remained roughly flat at an estimated 137 million st in the week ended January 1, Platts unit Bentek Energy said Monday.
That compares to a December 2013 average of 148 million st, and a five-year average of 174 million st, US Energy Information Administration data showed.
Stockpile data for December 2014 will not be available from the EIA for a few months.
US coal production and consumption was estimated to be off during the week due to the holidays. Bentek estimates US coal production totaled an estimated 18.2 million st last week, down 2% from the year-ago week.
Coal consumption for electricity generation totaled an estimated 16.6 million st during the week, down 12% from the year-ago period.
