Water storage levels at key India reservoirs drip down

November 28: The water storage available at 85 important reservoirs in India stood at 104.198 BCM as on November 27, slightly down from 106.822 BCM seen on November 20, and down 15% from the storage level of the corresponding period of last year, an official release said on November 28.

The storage on November 27 was 61% of the total storage capacity of the reservoirs of 155.046 BCM, which is the same as that on November 20.

The Central Water Commission monitors live storage status of 85 important reservoirs of the country on a weekly basis.

These reservoirs include 37 having hydropower benefit with installed capacity of more than 60 MW. The total storage capacity of these reservoirs is 155.046 BCM which is about 61% of the storage capacity of 253.388 BCM estimated to have been created in the country.

The 6 reservoirs in the northern region’s Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan, with capacity of 18.01 BCM, had a storage level of 11.21 BCM as on November 27, against a volume of 11.60 BCM as on November 20.

In the eastern region, the 15 reservoirs in Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Tripura, with capacity of 18.83 BCM, had storage level of 14.94 BCM as on November 27 as against 15.08 BCM on November 20.

The 22 reservoirs in the two western states of Gujarat and Maharashtra, with total storage capacity of 24.54 BCM, had available storage of 16.46 BCM as on November 27 as against 16.73 BCM as on November 20.

The 12 reservoirs in the four central region states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, which have total storage capacity of 42.30 BCM, had a storage level of 32.12 BCM as on November 27 from 32.84 BCM as on November 20.

Similarly, the 30 reservoirs in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, which had total capacity of 51.37 BCM, had storage level of 29.47 BCM as on November 27 against 30.57 BCM as on November 24.

As on November 27, states having better storage than last year for the corresponding period are Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

On November 20, states having better storage level than last year for the corresponding period are Kerala and Tamil Nadu. 

As on November 27, states having lower storage level over last year for the corresponding period are Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
