December 9: A weak trend prevailed in South African and Indonesian coal markets on December 8 amidst lack of enquiries from major buyers, including India, market sources said.
Prices of South African standard (6,000 Kcal NAR) material softened by $0.35 per ton while that of off-spec (5,500 Kcal NAR) material fell by $0.50 per ton during the day even as low grade Indonesian coal prices softened by $0.20 to $0.25 per ton.
Higher stocks of imported coal at major Indian ports with no major indication of spurt in demand, coupled with improvement in the domestic coal supply position, discouraged Indian traders to create fresh positions, they said.
