Yashwant Sinha ends protests over coal dumps

05 Dec 2013

The four-day dharna, led by BJP MP Yashwant Sinha, under the aegis of Gramin Visthapit Morcha, was called off at CCL's Tapin south coal mining project area late on Tuesday, following the intervention of Hazaribag SDO Rajiv Ranjan.

The other group, agitating under the aegis of Bahera Coal dump yard, headed by its president and JVM(P) leader Shivlal Mahato, went on an indefinite strike at Bahera, demanding the opening of the coal yard dump, which has been closed for the past two years.

Mahato produced a letter of November 21 issued by SDO Sadar saying that no new coal dump can be opened in the area due to technical reasons shown by the general manager of CCL Hazaribag area. The GM had pointed out that as per rule, only one coal dump yard can function for one project and since Bahera coal dump yard under the Tapin coal mining project is already functioning, no second coal dump will be allowed to be opened. Mahato said that the agitators led by the MP cannot be granted any fresh order for opening another coal dump. The coal dump had been given to the JMM camp where local people were engaged as workers.
