Reduction in coal import saves Rs 60,681.67 cr forex in FY25

India’s coal import during 2025-26 (FY26) was
down by 20.91 mt over the previous fiscal resulting in a Forex savings of Rs 60,681.67 crore during the fiscal, informed Union Minister of Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy.
“During the
FY25, total coal imported in the country was 243.62 million tons (mt), whereas,
in FY24, it was 264.53 mt. Due to reduction of around 20.91 mt in coal imports,
there has been a Forex saving of around Rs 60,681.67 crores during FY25
compared to FY24,” the minister said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.
Most of the requirement of
coal in the country is met through indigenous production/ supply. Ministry of
coal has set an ambitious domestic coal production target of about 1.5 billion
tons by FY30. Coal ministry had launched the Coal Logistic Plan
and Policy in February 2024 to develop infrastructure for efficient coal
evacuation in the country considering increased coal production projection by
FY30.
