Tata Steel UK's starts construction of EAF facility in Port Talbot
15 Jul 2025
In a major step towards decarbonising
the UK steel industry, Tata Steel UK has marked the official start of
construction on its cutting-edge Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) facility in Port
Talbot, heralding a new era of low-carbon steelmaking in Britain, according to
a company release.
“This is an important day for Tata Group, Tata Steel and for the
UK. Today’s groundbreaking marks not just the beginning of a new Electric Arc
Furnace, but a new era for sustainable manufacturing in Britain. At Port
Talbot, we are building the foundations of a cleaner, greener future,
supporting jobs, driving innovation, and demonstrating our commitment to
responsible industry leadership,” said Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata
Steel.
The event symbolically launched the UK’s largest low-emission
steelmaking project—part of a £1.25 billion green transformation, backed by
£500 million in UK Government funding.
Set
to be commissioned by the end of 2027, the new EAF facility is expected to
slash carbon emissions at Port Talbot by around 90 percent, equating to a
reduction of nearly 5 million tons of CO₂ annually. The project is also poised
to safeguard 5,000 direct jobs and ensure the long-term sustainability of steel
production in the UK.
The Port Talbot EAF project is a cornerstone of Tata Steel’s wider
decarbonisation strategy, aligned with global climate goals and the UK’s
transition to net zero. Once operational, the EAF will use scrap steel and
renewable energy to produce high-quality steel with significantly lower
emissions, replacing traditional blast furnaces.
